Overview
Restorative Index is a focused DentaCalc calculation for dental public health. Calculates filled teeth as a percentage of decayed plus filled teeth.
The tool is designed to reduce repetitive arithmetic and make the underlying relationship explicit. It is not a diagnostic system and does not replace history, examination, imaging, professional judgement, manufacturer information or locally applicable guidance.
Formula and variables
Formula: Filled teeth ÷ (decayed + filled teeth) × 100.
Use measurements taken with a consistent technique and in the units displayed by the calculator. The arithmetic is intentionally transparent so the result can be checked independently. Keep adequate precision during intermediate steps and round only the final displayed result unless a validated protocol requires otherwise.
A numerical result is only as reliable as its inputs. Transcription errors, mixed measurement conventions, inconsistent landmarks and values collected at different clinical time points can create a precise-looking but misleading answer.
Clinical significance
Proportion of teeth with current or past caries that have been restored.
In dental public health, quantitative measurements are most useful when they support a broader clinical question rather than becoming an isolated treatment threshold. Serial values can be helpful when the same method, landmarks and recording conditions are used consistently.
Where a published index or historical equation is involved, consider the population and purpose for which it was developed. Contemporary care may use the measure for description, audit, communication or adjunctive planning without treating the calculated value as an independent indication for intervention.
How to calculate
Confirm each source value before entry. Enter the measurements shown, then apply Filled teeth ÷ (decayed + filled teeth) × 100.
After calculation, sense-check the magnitude and direction of the answer. If a percentage exceeds a logically possible range for the underlying measure, or a dimensional result is incompatible with the source records, revisit the inputs before documenting or using the result.
For serial comparisons, record the method used alongside the value. This makes later interpretation more defensible and reduces the risk of comparing measurements obtained with different landmarks, instruments, radiographic calibration or definitions.
Assumptions and limitations
This calculator assumes that the entered measurements represent the intended clinical variables and that the denominator is valid where division is required. It does not independently validate anatomy, diagnosis, image calibration, disease classification or treatment suitability.
Calculated indices can be affected by measurement error, examiner calibration, patient factors and the clinical setting. Small numerical changes may fall within expected measurement variability and should not automatically be interpreted as biological change.
When the result may influence invasive treatment, medicine administration, referral or long-term prognosis, confirm the calculation against the original records and the current professional standard relevant to that decision.
Monitoring and documentation
Document the source measurements, date, relevant clinical context and the calculated result when it contributes to care. For repeated measurements, use the same definitions and technique wherever possible.
If the value is used for audit, population comparison or research, define inclusion criteria and the measurement protocol before data collection. Consistency is often more important than extra decimal places.
Unexpected results should trigger a review of the inputs and method rather than an automatic change in treatment. A calculation can expose inconsistency in the data, but it cannot determine why the inconsistency occurred.
When a calculated value is communicated to another clinician, include enough context for that person to understand how it was obtained. Record the relevant units, landmark or scoring convention, whether the value was measured directly or estimated, and any known limitation that could affect interpretation. This is especially important when results are transferred between practices, software systems or stages of multidisciplinary care.
Worked example
Use representative training values within the calculator and independently reproduce the arithmetic with the stated formula. Compare the manual result with DentaCalc before routine use.
For clinical records, replace the training values with measurements obtained from the current patient or dataset. Do not copy example values into a live record. The purpose of the example is to verify understanding of the relationship between numerator, denominator and displayed unit.
